Resurrections, Matrix, Non-binarity and Bugs

Created 2021-12-26

Some notes about how the new Matrix movie seems to talk about non-binarity a lot and specifically about the character Bugs. SPOILERS AHEAD

Other people gendering Bugs

Trying to confirm if Bugs is canonically non-binary we look at the instances of Bugs being gendered in the movie. It seems that more often than not even if using a pronoun to refer to Bugs would be unambiguous and maybe even expected the characters will either use "Bugs" or "captain".

00:05:57 Smith/Morpheus Kill her.
01:18:43 Freya [talking to Niobe] Bugs has the same independence of mind she had the day you freed her.
01:40:00 Niobe [talking to Neo] And do not rob my ex-captain of her agency,
which she exercised with her own
particular brand of shortsighted stupidity.

(Maybe) Notable things

Some more things that either seem to hint that Bugs is non-binary or just non-binarity being a major theme in the movie.

00:07:48 Bugs My name is Bugs. As in "Bunny"
[some people consider Bugs Bunny to be canonically genderfluid]
00:11:33 Morpheus [being offered pills] You call this a choice?
Bugs Oh, honestly, when somebody offered me these things,
I went off on binary conceptions of the world
and said there was no way I was swallowing
some symbolic reduction of my life.
[...snip because long but it's great]
[if we consider how Bugs looks and make a guess that Bugs was AFAB (only for lore analysis, don't do this to people), "symbolic reduction" could refer to the red/blue color of the pills as symbolic reductions of gender]
00:13:56 [environment] [the game Neo is working on is called Binary which, as a sequel to The Matrix, is IMO very obviously meant that when cisnormative regime of (The Matrix) is gone the next coercive regime we're faced with is the strict gender binary]
[the poster on Neo's monitor subtitle] New: Binary gameplay revealed
00:21:33 The Analyst [trying to explain away Neo's episode] Maybe it's not as binary as that.
[i don't think this one is relevant, but they used the word "binary" where i think (i'm not a native speaker) it's more common to say "not so black and white" or some other euphemism instead of "binary"]
00:42:55 [environment] [Bugs has a cartoon carrot on a t-shirt - Bugs Bunny, this doesn't say anything new but it's cute]
01:28:07 [environment] [Bugs is wearing a split-skirt! (a Victorian skirt/pants hybrid)]
01:28:44 Smith [talking to Neo] Look how binary is the form, the nature of things.
Ones and zeros. Light and dark. Choice and its absence. Anderson and Smith.
[this one probably isn't related but they said the word]
